Where Were You??? on 26/11... A reminder of the gory night that was, a platform to vent and to speak up for the cause of 26/11.

Event Plan:

We dont want our activity to in anyway hinder the peace or functioning of the vicinity. We would form a circle of 3-4 people, one of the participants would come in the center and speak about what s/he was doing on 26/29 November 2008. Once s/he finishes, s/he points to a random person in the circle and asks "Where Were You?". Now this person, (who could be amongst us or a bystander who teams up) would come to the center circle and speak about her/is experience on 26-29/11.


What Do We Wish To Achieve?

Mumbai Suffers from Amnesia. We forget too early and too fast. Well, thats what critics think, we think NOT.

Lest we forget, the tragedy of 26/11. Not to corrode our wounds with salt, but to remember and to let people know that the famous Mumbai Spirit cannot be taken for granted.

The results of this campaign would not all be tangible and quantifiable. Whats important is that it starts the internal dialogue... And gets you to think.

We could be cynical and resigned, and sure about changelessness, or initiate and partake in an event that speak up: truly and openly.

What are you doing on the anniversary of that gory night? It still generates  a chill down my spine when I think of that ominous night. It saddens me to learn that many of us have lived up to the amnesic nature of Mumbai. And it is upon us, few awakened souls, to create an intersting movement for people to participate.

What Is The (Tentative) Plan??

Debanjan Nandy,  seeks financial support to join the National Film and Television School (NFTS), Beaconsfield, UK for an MA in Animation Film Direction. He's an NID alumnus, and has worked with Famous Studios (Mumbai), OGS Animation (Kolkata), Galloping Films (Australia), MTV (Mumbai) and UNICEF.

Dear Ma'am/ Sir,

 

      I am Debanjan Nandy from Mumbai, India. I am an animation film maker and a graduate in Animation Film Design from the National Institute of Design (NID) - India's premier design institute. After graduation, I have worked professionally for four years on various projects with studios like Famous House of Animation, Famous Studios, Mumbai, OGS Animation (Kolkata) and Galloping Films (Australia), MTV (Mumbai) and UNICEF. Some of the projects included television commercials like Cadbury's, Tata Sky, Sony Pix, ICICI Prudential, UNICEF and many more and also on television series like Jonny Bravo. While creating animation for children in the areas of education and entertainment, awareness campaigns etc., I feel the need to undergo professional training in Animation Direction to convey my stories more effectively. Currently, I have secured a place among eight students in the world for a two year extensive course to learn the craft of Animation film Direction (MA in Animation Direction) at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), Beaconsfield, UK (http://www.nftsfilm-tv.ac.uk/).

 

NFTS receives half its funding from the Government of UK – the Department of Culture, Media and Sport; and the other half from the Film and Television industry.  Therefore, it is part-private and part-public funded.  It is a higher education establishment providing post-graduate education.  It has been nominated as a Skillset Screen Academy and has a long standing reputation as UK's leading centre of excellence in Film and Television training.  The MA course is validated by the Royal College of Art, London. 

 

With my four years of industry experience, including days and nights of hardship, I am looking forward to learning a lot more in order to design great films. The expense of higher study at NFTS is huge (GBP 50,000 / INR 4,250,000). And with respect to the foreign exchange rates, the amount is massive and substantially high. Working hard to becoming a successful screen-storyteller is a dream, and I would like to proceed forward for education in such a prestigious school. I would be thankful to receive any kind of financial help, in the form of scholarships or grants from your institution/individuals that would help me sign up for the course successfully.

 

My course begins in January, and I need to pay my tuition fees by 10^th of November 2009. I am looking for funding for my cost of living in the UK that can open a window to my tuition fees that the bank has agreed to give me as an educational loan. If I am granted a scholarship/grant/sponsorship to aid my higher education in UK, I aim to learn to direct good films to tell good stories to the world around, so as to elevate the value and quality of life. After completion of the course in Animation Direction, I look forward to work on educational programs for children to help them learn.

H1N1 / Swine Flu PRECAUTIONS

· Please do not panic, Swine Flu is currently not a national pandemic the way it is made out to be

· Please do not take self-medication as that renders the drug useless in actual treatment should you get the virus

· 'SWINE FLU' medicines are ONLY available with Govt. Hospitals in India – contact details enclosed below

· Should you suspect symptoms:

o Please get your tests done immediately

o We would also strongly recommend that you stay at home and ensure you do not spread the infection by travelling or coming into work

· All cases of Swine Flu are not serious in nature, however since there is no vaccine available currently to protect against it, the best alternative is to follow some preventive measures as below:

DO'S

1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissue in the trash after you use it. Use the disposable masks in airports, crowded markets.

2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze

3. Use alcohol-based hand cleaners (e.g: Germ Free)

4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people

5. Always maintain high levels of personal hygiene, especially before and after food preparation and in & out of toilets.

6. While in an affected region, seek immediate medical attention if you develop influenza-like symptoms. (High Fever, body pain, coughing and red nose)

7. Get plenty of sleep

8. Rest and take plenty of liquids

9. Drink plenty of water and eat nutritious food

DON'TS

1. Touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way

2. Visits live animal markets, poultry and pig farms in affected countries

3. Shake hands or hug in greeting

4. Spit in public

5. Take medicines without consulting a physician

6. If you are sick, PLEASE stay at home and limit contact with others as much as possible

7. Forget to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze

8. Neglect yourself and seek medical advice if needed

Physiotherapist Needed for 26/11 survivor Poonam Singh

Poonam Singh, a 26/11 survivor, received bullet wounds in both legs. She needs physiotherapy in order to walk comfortably again. She is just 34, she has young children to bring up. She lives in the slums at Vikhroli, and her room is right at the top of a hillock. This makes it difficult to bring her down everytime she needs to go for a physiotherapy session.

India Helps is looking out for a physiotherapist who would be willing to conduct weekly physiotherapy sessions at her residence, either pro bono or at a nominal charge. Do write in to India Helps if you could help out. They can be contacted at indiahelps@gmail.com.

Hi All,
I have come across one of the youngest 26/11 victims. Vaishnavi, aged about 4mnths was only 15days old when her parents Samanya & Deepti were killed at the Gateway of India during the Mumbai mayhem.

She had stayed back at home with her caretaker-Reshma. Reshma, apparently din't know who to contact to find out the whereabouts of the other relatives of the deceased couple and kept the child with her.

She's been taking care of Vaishnavi since then & was in Hyd to meet a relative; when we came to know about all this. She works as a maid and is known to my maid in Hyd.

I have posted some pics of the baby and this woman here. The parents originally belonged to Gujrat, and had been staying at Virar area of Mumbai and were engaged in Sarees' business.

These are the only details we could get out of Reshma and Zubin along with us is taking it forward.

We urge you all to help us in whichever possible way to get the child united with her relatives, family.

Ebullient Discussion on Terror Management @ SIES, Nerul

Attended a special session on "Terror Management" at SIES management school as one of the panelists bringing to the fore the effectiveness of new media. The students were spirited, and the discussion- highpowered. Would follow up with the institute to help the wonderful bunch of students from thought and talk to effective action. And I sincerely wish other instiitutes follow suit and engage in similar activities to give students a platform to speak up, charter a plan and execute it.

I spoke a little nervily towards the end of the discussion, overwhelmed that I was by emotions, hope I managed to walk out without offending anybody?

Pray For Sheru! Salute Sheru the HERO

According to the recent high court ruling... all NUISANCE stray dogs will be killed. A dog barking incessantly, would amount to "nuisance". (Are we making a grave mistake?)

When Terrorist Ajmal rammed in to CST and fired indiscriminately; unable to bear the sound of the bullet shots, even dogs ran off CST station. Sheru stood there and barked, barked and barked... even after being hit by bullets. He is now recuperating in the ICU of the animal hospital, being treated for the bullets that he braved.


Join me in my prayers for him. He has done a lot for humankind, that humans would also be scared to.

But with the recent ruling on culling of strays.. I wonder though..

what if sheru is picked up by BMC to be culled one day for barking?

(Hu)ManKind!... (Hu)Man are we.. But how kind?

I recollect that I did receive a call (via Mumbai Terror Helpline) by some kind soul who asked me for the number of  NGOs  for stray dogs and narrated the story of a stray dog screaming at the terrorist until he was shot by the rascal. I donot remember who the kind soul was and I have not stored the number. If you are the person. Please call me, such noble work should be communicated to more people through the media. Please dont shy. You set an example of empathy. Please come out and inspire us.

You could do much more… by providing emergency first aid.

Well, millions of us who watched the carnage on TV were helpless and wanted to do something.

Here is a chance. Make best of it

ACTIVITY #01: EMERGENCY FIRST AID WORKSHOP

Dr. Desai from ARC INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL SERVICES will give us a live demonstration on first aid and CPR.

By getting trained in providing First Aid you will be able to Act Promptly and help victims with emergency first aid whenever there is any calamity. If hospitals get crowded and short of staff. You could fill in for providing very basic first aid that doesn't require a medical degree but know-how, agility and empathy.

ACTIVITY# 02: ANIMAL ANGELS WORKSHOP

Special Session with Animal Angels: a group that makes use of the power of animals to heal emotional scars and also to add cheer to our lives.

Animal Angels Foundation is offering Animal Assisted Activity for those affected by the Mumbai Terror Blasts and for those who wish to know about and use the healing effect of animals to assist other people.

Animal Assisted Therapy is the use of trained therapy animals in counseling. Animal Angels has a team of psychologists and counselors who along with trained therapy animals will help the trauma victims to overcome post trauma stress.

How will attendee benefit?

A comforting hug from a dog is one way of letting out your pent up stress. This is called Animal Assisted Therapy. Animals are unconditional and their touch is soothing. Most of the time people in trauma or in a state of shock don't want to talk as they re experience the trauma. With animals you do not need to talk. Even if you hug the therapy dog, it provides you immense comfort and reassurance. It also helps in catharsis or venting out of emotions. A person may cry on hugging the dog as it releases the emotions locked up inside. An animal will not judge you for what you do or say, hence providing a very open environment to express oneself.

Much cant be said… Witness and Experience the magic unfold. Participate!

Our friend from Bombay Clicks and Mam Movies would help us get a meeting with the police commissioner. So that we could tell him about the fact that we will be there to help the police in times of adversity by providing quick medical assistance.

I would be speaking to my media friends and will ask them to inform us of any tragic incidence that needs our assistance.

I would just give my number to them and would send chain sms's to all in the group.

We shall call this group "Group All Proactive" or GAP.

Art of Living - Trauma Care

In the aftermath of the terror attacks, the Art of Living Foundation is offering free trauma relief workshops for Mumbaikars from December 1st, 2008. These sessions will be conducted in South and Central Mumbai and are open to all.

The three day, one hour a day modules will focus on helping citizens of Mumbai to cope with from the after effects of the trauma and return to a calmer state of mind.

Animal Angels! Offer to Help

Animals have a great power to heal wounds. I called up Minal from the organization following a common a comment on this blog. She would be happy to help. I have received a lot of calls from those who sounded psychologically affected (adversely), but were not so open for psychological help. we need to take help to them.

Thanks to the help offered by Gaurav from Wadala, we are speaking to educational institutes in the dadar/matunga area for their help. If they could give us some space in their premises to carry out therapy programmes., it will be wonderful. Do you know of someone in this area??? if you do, please let us know.

Post trauma Counseling: Masina Hospital

Masina Hospital has activated a 24-hour helpline number for distress callers.

Now, that the initial and acute shock has passed, the post-terror trauma will start sinking in. In the coming days they expect a large number of callers struggling to cope up. Their psychiatrists are already handling calls from foreigners, youngsters and parents of disturbed school children. Most of their callers are in the age group of 25-30. They are utterly traumatized, nervous, often in a state of denial. The symptoms of post-terror trauma are usually numbness, guilt, refusal to make an eye contact, refusal to speak to even loved ones and so on.

Missing: Mr. Rajeev Saraswat

an email that i received:

Thank you for your coverage on-line on the horrendous attacks in
Mumbai

I am concerned about a missing relative. My uncle Mr Rajeev Saraswat (aged 50) is still missing. He was in the Taj on the fourth floor attending a training session at the hotel organised by his employers Hindustan Petroleum.

We know that he was injured - he was wounded in one hand from gunfire, but he has not made any contact since Thursday morning. His cell phone is not being answered, and though we are told by the Taj that he was
taken away and sent to hospital, no-one knows that with certainty and no-one appears able to trace him at present.

His name does not appear anywhere on the lists of the wounded, and none of the hospitals have him registered as being admitted. Even the twitter blogs - as brilliant as they are - do not have his name anywhere and I need help finding him urgently.

We are very concerned about him - I am based in the UK and cannot get any useful information. Are you able to help?

This is on my own behalf and on behalf of all those relatives dealing with the double trauma of this appalling attack as well as lack of news on a missing dear relative.

Please help!
